A canvas journal is inspiring all on its own; mix that with the inspiration of being in a new place and seeing new sites and the creativity will be flowing freely—the perfect time to draw, paint or doodle your way through your trip.

Decide what size journal you want to make. This is an important step as it needs to be large enough to acommodate your creativity, but small enough for you to want to carry around. A good size for most purposes is twelve-by-eighteen inches, but you can make it any size you like.
Cut each piece of the cardboard 1/2 inch larger than the size you decided upon. You will be covering these with canvas later to make a cover for the book. Making these a little larger than the canvas pages will allow them to protect the inside pages from damage.
Cut each of the pieces of canvas (cut out about 20 or 30 pages) to the size that you want the book to be. If you think you may want to frame this art later, you might want to add an inch to the longest side to allow excess material for binding.
Put the pages together, neatly stacked one on top of each other as they will appear in the book, primed sides facing you. Set aside.
Cut two pieces of canvas about 1 inch larger than the cardboard pieces, all of the way around. Using craft glue or hot glue, attach these to one side of the cardboard and flatten out any air pockets. Turn the cardboard over, fold the excess canvas over the edges and glue securely. Cover both pieces of cardboard in this manner.
Lay each piece of covered cardboard on either side of the stack of canvases to form a cover. Punch four holes in each piece of canvas and the two covers in exactly the same position along the left side. Feed the rope through one hole and back through another, “sewing” the pieces together, and securely tie it off. You should now have a journal book with canvas pages, ready to decorate and fill as you wish.
